Little Muffins in the Big City

Greetings from Philadelphia everyone! So today was our first full day here and we went to City Hall and the museum to see the Frida Kahlo exhibit and other awesome collections. We've also had a lot of opportunities to walk around the city and check out all the different sights. One of the things that I've found most interesting is all the art that is in this city. also, we weren't allowed to take pictures in the gallery so here's what you wouldve seen...

Today we got to see the big clothespin by Claes Oldenberg and the LOVE sculpture by Robert Indiana. Also, Philly has the largest urban mural program in the country...we also discussed the murals that Diego Rivera (Frida's husband) created, including the very controversial mural that was destroyed in the Rockefeller building.

So this got me thinking...If you all had the opportunity to create a mural on any building on Denison's campus, which building would you choose and what images would you paint...and why? Consider the contributions of the community and that impact that it'll make.

Here are some photographs to inspire you...

Firstly, you guys are amazing. Those pictures are great, and I wish I could’ve been there with everyone! Regarding your question: I think a great place to put a mural would be the Student Union. I guess it’s somewhat of an obvious choice, but regardless of major, the student center is a meeting place for everyone. Because Denison is a small school, social groups are often segregated, whether it is through Greek life, race, major, sport etc. However, everyone enters the Student Union at some point during the week, which I believe makes it a perfect location for a mural. A mural that would be great to have on the campus would consist of a “photograph of the world.” I don’t know what that would be exactly, however, Denison is so isolated from the rest of the world. I find that students easily forget about events or dilemmas that occur beyond the borders of our community on the hill, especially because so many students here are so well established. When an issue does not directly affect someone, they often don't pay much attention to it. I also think it would be a cool idea to have a mural composed by the students on a day to day basis- almost equivalent to a wall of friendly graffiti. Of course this would have to monitored, but it would be really interesting for people to put their thoughts up on a wall for everyone to consider. It would be great to help promote awareness on campus at an individual and community level.
